A Poem For Cobh

The print entitled "The Promenade, Cobh" is one of my best sellers. It has inspired me to write this poem which tells of the character and a little of the story of our home town.

I hope it has done Cobh justice:

The Promenade, Cobh

On a beautiful day it's hard to beat

The Great Island of Cobh in the midday heat

Live music down town on a summer's day

Is sure to push the clouds away

Take a stroll along the town

Go up the hill then come back down

I know you'll find some mighty craic

Wherever you live you won't want to go back

For all the friends you're sure to meet

It will be worth your sore and aching feet

And the many of Cobh who walked before

Will tell you stories with just a dash of a little more!

But one thing’s for sure that in this town

Is a great history to be found

Can you see the Old White Star Line and pier?

Many a traveller left home from here

The Titanic set sail proud and tall

But Cobh was to be its last port of call

The Promenade where children play

Has also seen a sadder day

The Lusitania where many died

The Promenade where their souls did lie

Saint Coleman's Cathedral who honoured those dead

Is not the only place where you can wed

This is a view of Cobh from a certain balcony

The Sirius Arts Centre has its own history

It was The Old Yacht Club and it's seen many a race

But also where the odd nuptial takes place

So if you ever want to say "I do"

Come to Cobh, you'll have some view!
